EMC Question of the Week: April 16, 2018

Garage Door Opener

Intentional transmitters that typically operate at ISM-band frequencies include,

  1. commercial AM and FM radio stations
  2. wireless microphones and garage door openers
  3. submarine telecommunication equipment
  4. none of the above (intentional transmitters can't use ISM bands)

Answer

The correct answer is "b." ISM bands are frequencies originally allocated for industrial, scientific and medical equipment, although other devices such including bluetooth and WiFi devices also use them. Transmitters operating at ISM frequencies generally do not need to be licensed provided they meet certain limitations on their radiated power. For this reason many low-cost, short range transmitters operate in these bands, including RFID transmitters and near-field communications (NFC) equipment.

The ISM bands are defined by the ITU Radio Regulations. Nevertheless, individual countries may have different regulations regarding the use of these bands.
